In the season of weirdly wonderful weather, I suppose we shouldn't have been surprised that it we had HOT weather for our annual fall colors drive. By hot I mean 80 degrees, eat dinner outside in the mountains in Vermont HOT! I must admit that even this tropical girl likes her fall folliage trip crispy cool, but we didn't let the weather take away from the fun of driving the windy little roads during the most beautiful season of the year.
The colors were somewhat muted this year. Probably the drought this summer had an impact on that. We actually saw far more color in Maine than in Vermont... another anomolie.

We saw ZERO MOOSE... no matter how many roads we drive that claim that moose sightings are practically guaranteed, the big goofy looking cows of the north woods cleverly stay out of our view. I look anyway.. gazing longingly into the swampy ponds near the road, sitting tensely when those MOOSE warning signs pop up on the horizon. Sigh.. I'll never give up. (I have seen a few moose over the years... but I've been in a big slump for about 2 years.)
My favorite moment of the trip... Definitely dinner on the deck of Gracies followed by a walk through the quiet streets of Stowe.
Oh... a close second was some time spent on a little pond in Maine where we met a couple and their dog heading out for a late afternoon canoe trip. The setting was lovely.. and we got a great photo of the trio motoring away toward the loons. Ralph loved this stop too.. he got to meet a new dog, swim for sticks, and wander about feely enjoying all of the good smells.
There is a LEAF PEEPING album on the homepage photo gallery.
