A last minute trip to New Orleans was the perfect way to celebrate surviving this past year... especially the last 5 months of it. New Orleans was chilly, but the spicy delicious food made it a wonderful 58th birthday trip, anyway.

Down on the Farm
We shouldn't have been surprised that "the farm" wouldn't be like any farm you could imagine. But we couldn't have anticipated what a magical place our dear friends have created on this pastoral piece of Michigan countryside.

I'm always looking for friends and family to visit... "on the way".. north to the island and this year's very special treat was our trip to visit on their farm in Michigan. We met the boys on Shark Key, where until recently they owned a home. They were part of our morning dog walk, and soon all three became treasured members of our family. We were all so sad when they sold their home and moved their winter digs to Palm Springs.

We had heard all about the farm over casual dinners and home-grown sunset celebrations in Key West. We loved hearing about Orson chasing the geese in the pond, the fly-way marsh, and Rick's tree nursery. We had an open invitation to come and visit, but even I knew that Michigan was not around the corner from either Key West or the island. So I was thrilled when Michael agreed that we could make a trip to the farm part of our trek north this June.

Both os our friends have incredible taste.. and the house on the farm reflects both their personal style and their skill in designing a beautiful welcoming home. The house is filled with light, warm colors, and comfortable furnishings. The grounds are magical with cascading ponds, islands of trees, and wetland marshes. The gentlemen farmers took us for a ride-about on the tractors with both dogs riding along. Every acrea of property refelcts their concern for the environment.

We loved the little surrounding towns and the tastey restaurants that we got to vist. Our guest room was so comfortable and private and stylish. But the highlight of the visit was just getting to spend time with the boys and watching best buddies Orson and Ralph play... and play.. and play and play. We felt absolutely at home. Isn't that the true mark of gracious hosts?

I think we all decided that Michigan needs to be "on the way" every year. We're already looking forward to visiting again. Visit the HOME PAGE and click on the "Points North" thumbail in the slides gallery to see some more photos of life on the farm.
