Top Down on Hwy One
Mike & Karen Boxster Adventure
CALIFORNIA HWY 1 WAS BUILT FOR A BOXSTER
As my adorable husband, Michael, keeps telling me it’s not about speed it’s about handling the curves. CURVES…. Curves are the very definition of most of CA Hwy 1. So we loaded up our Boxster bags, put down the top and began our journey in The Sea Ranch and headed toward San Diego.
HOLY PELICANS, BAT MAN!
We wandered across the most amazing gathering of pelicans that I have ever seen. There were hundreds of these large rather goofy looking birds. I must admit I really LOVE Pelicans and I was clearly in pelican heaven. The birds covered every rock and every inch of ocean until some silent signal was given and many would take flight and begin dive-bombing the water. I can only assume that the ‘silent-signal’ was schools of bait fish making a tidy lunch for one and all.
FIRST STOP – MONTEREY
Monterey is always a favorite stop for us. The town is so charming, the food, especially at our favorite Peppers Mexicali Cafe, never disappoints. But before heading out to dinner we wanted to find a cozy spot by the water for cocktails and a view. We found a perfect spot right on the water and the margaritas were really wonderful.
WHALE WATCHING ON MONTEREY BAY
In all of our many visits to Monterey, we had never taken advantage of the many whale watching trips available. Now that we no longer get our fill on summer whales on the island, this time we decided to see if we could find some west coast whales to enjoy. The trip was wonderful and we did see some whales, but the dolphins took center stage on this trip. Thousands of dolphins would not be an exaggeration. They were putting on their very best aerial show, too, riding the wake of the boat, jumping in unison, and definitely entertaining the appreciative audience on the boat.
PIEDRAS BLANCAS ELEPHANT SEAL ROOKERY
It simply wouldn’t be a drive down Hwy 1 without a stop to see the elephant seals. This trip we were there at just the right time. The beaches were full and included big bulls as well as cows with this year’s calves. Being true seals, their only means of land transportation is a sort of shimmy-waddle. It’s quite comical watching animals this big move like that. But when the big bulls get upset about something they can move quite quickly to challenge each other with what appears to be mostly displays of power rather than actual aggression.
SUNSET ON THE VENTURA HARBOR
Having lived on the California gold coast for many years, Ventura Harbor was always a favorite place to hang. Formerly called Eric’s, the Beach House Fish on the Ventura Pier is a long-time family favorite. Our plan was to be there for sunset to enjoy the wonderful food, delicious drinks, and of course, the view. We were not disappointed. It was a perfect evening made even more convenient by staying at The Pierpont Inn right across the street. I’d say this hotel has seen better days, but the location was perfect.
I also spent about 10 years living in San Diego. I LOVE San Diego. It is such a beautiful place with idea climate and so many wonderful things to enjoy. San Diego has grown a lot since I lived here, and the traffic is downright horrible, but the views and the climate and the attractions are still unbeatable. This trip, our first together, we stayed on Shelter Island which is a wonderful location from which to explore the city.
GOOD FOOD… GOOD TIMES
For me, good food is always the highlight of any trip. Our visit in San Diego featured two very memorable meals. One in Old Town for Mexican at Cafe Coyote. Relaxed, casual, and fun. And the other, a delightfully elegant meal at a long time favorite restaurant in La Jolla, The Marine Room.
The Marine Room.. ahhhhhhh… I sigh.. I swoon.. I love the Marine room. The location, right on the beach, with waves that can sometimes crash against the glass, is amazing. The food is also just spectacular. Creative and delicious. It really was THE memorable evening among the many wonderful memories this trip held. And that’s truly saying something!
WHAT AN ADVENTURE
From our home in The Sea Ranch to the beautiful, tropical San Diego, this meander down Hwy 1 was really a fabulous trip. It’s absolutely impossible not to love the spectacular views, the wonderful cities, the wild-life, and delicious food that were all part of this adventure. A GREAT time was had by one and all.
