Soggy Island Visitors
The West Coast Kaisers came to visit to experience the many faces of island life.
Michael and I started frowning about the same time.. We were both looking at the weather forecast and wondering what happened. Our beautiful warm, sunny weather was tanking; nothing but rain and fog for days ahead. Usually, we'd think about grabbing a good book and curling up under an afghan, but we had company coming and we were both wondering how we would keep two 18 year olds entertained in the tiny cabin if the rain persisted.
As predicted by weather.com, Jeff, Michelle and Kate arrived for their 3 day visit, in the fog and rain. The normally "charming" wet landing at the beach left their feet FREEZING, and the long walk up the hill in the persistent drippy atmosphere did nothing to take the chill off. They arrived at the back door looking more than a little bedraggled, but delightfully cheerful in spite of the soggy island welcome.
Our little cabin in the woods is truly SMALL... one bedroom, one bathroom, and a loft, turned into a dorm for our guests. The charm of the island is all "out there"... along the trails, and beaches... through the marsh.. and of course out on the water. But the band of west coast Kaisers filled the tiny cabin with good humor; always keeping an eye on the sky for outdoor opportunities.
Fortunately, we did get little breaks in the weather that allowed for some outdoor fun. Captain Mike took the group off to look for whales, porpoise, and seals.. and found them all. The girls bravely took Ralph and explored the island ignoring the damp and chill. And on the very last day the sun actually appeared blessing us with the opportunity for another boating adventure and our traditional cocktails on the deck in the falling light. The chilly night was ideal for a long soak in the hot tub.... even if Jeff found getting in a bit more challenging than expected. And of course, it's always fun to just sit around over good food, and good wine to reminisce about old times and catch up on what's new.
We always want our island guest to experience the best of this magical place, and probably we worry more than they do when we cannot snap our fingers and produce good weather. Though weather wasn’t perfect our visit with the west Coast Kaisers was. Thanks for coming, Jeff, Michelle, and Kate.
