Lunch with Grover
It's always a nice surprise when one of the locals joins us for lunch at Geiger Key.

On of our favorite lunch hangs is the funky waterfront Geiger Key Marina. Although it gets its share of tourists, it is a year round locals place with good food, especially a wonderful blackened fish sandwich, basket or salad, good burgers, cold beer, ocean breezes, blue green views, and the occasional deafening sounds of fly-by jets from Boca Chica. I'm sure we eat there at least once a week... it's always provides a yummy respite in the middle of our hectic day. (haha)

On several visits we've seen the marina mascot, Grover.. A large friendly bar fly who usually wanders in at happy hour for some lettuce hand-outs and a bowl of fresh water. Until yesterday, we've always seen him lounging on the wooden deck.. basking in the fading sun and enjoying the attention of his friends at the bar.

But yesterday, Grover emerged after his swim across the water from his home in the mangroves and decided to join us for lunch. It was quite a surprise when this 4 ft, prehistoric looking creature appeared over Mike's shoulder inches away from the condiments. He sat there quietly observing until he got bored with us and wandered down to the next table where he attempted to crawl onto the table as a chicken sandwich arrived! It seems Grover really likes chicken. He reluctantly accepted some fresh lettuce as a consolation prize, shaking his head and raising his dewlap to express his displeasure.

I must admit I'm not enchanted with the iguanas any more. With few natural enemies, there seem to be more of them all of the time.. and, in addition to chicken, they have an unfortunate taste for my orchids! But it was a wonderfully absurd, Key West kind of experience to have lunch with Grover at Geiger.
